International foundation to implement 3 year river recovery project in Quirino

The International River Foundation (IRF) has commenced its three-year project entitled Water and Environment: Building Unity for Inclusive Living and Development (WE BUILD) from October 2014-September 2017 particularly in Addalam River.

The project which was launched recently at the Quirino State University (QSU) here aims to foster stewardship of environmental and water resources to achieve sustainable returns of river health.

IRF and Oceanagold restore Region 2 river basins

A river foundation in collaboration with an Australian mining firm commercially operating in the province launched "Project We Build," with the goal of promoting the sustainable restoration and management of river basins destroyed by illegal small scale mining operations in the Cagayan Valley region.

In this project, also called "Water and Environment: Building Unity for Inclusive Living and Development," OceanaGold (Phils.) Inc. has partnered with International River Foundation (IRF), affected communities and non-government organizations.

Sooo. My feet have wandered to a lot of provinces last year. Most were for work purposes so I really did not have the chance to roam around tourist-style. But nevertheless, a new place is a good place. After a few visits, at least. Haha.

Didipio River

1. Environmental groups said the Didipio River in Nueva Vizcaya is "biologically dead," and they are blaming the operation of a copper and gold mine in the area for the tragedy. Clemente Bautista, national coordinator of Kalikasan-People's Network for the Environment, said the main river in Barangay Didipio where Oceana Gold Corp., operator of the Didipio mines, allegedly release its mine effluents, is now emitting foul odor. The thick, orange-brown siltation and the disappearance of aquatic resources??"such as water snails, shrimps, carp, mud fish and other local species that used to populate the river??"are indications that the river is dying, if not already dead, Bautista said. According to Bautista, who took part in the National Fact-Finding and Solidarity Mission, led by Defend Patrimony! Alliance, along with Alyansa ng Nagkakaisang Vizcayanos Para sa Kalikasan, they have discovered a Pandora's box of ecological destruction and resource plunder across three big mining companies in the Nueva Vizcaya province. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has blamed small-scale mining operations as the culprit behind the chemical contamination of rivers in the province.
