The Negros shrew (Crocidura negrina) is a white-toothed shrew found only on the island of Negros in the Philippines. It is locally called the katsurí and is listed as a critically endangered species due to habitat loss and a restricted range.

But in Barangay Lima (population: about 600) in this fifth-class farming community, carabaos, or water buffalos, are met with the same affection, if not face stiff competition with dogs.
One of the carabaos is Yolanda, who for the past two years has been a "beloved and faithful partner" of farmer Mario Mercado.

Wildlife rescued in Palawan
Several exotics animals were rescued in Bataraza, Palawan late Wednesday.
At least 100 talking mynas, 90 of which were still alive; 10 blue-naped parrots, 6 of which were still alive; 3 katala; a crocodile; and a wild boar were seized from suspects Shirley Cortez, Edgardo Caramat, Joel Castro and Enrico Acompanado in Barangay Bulalacao, Bataraza town.
The Provincial Law Enforcement Task Force, Bantay Palawan and Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Enforcement Team rescued the animals and arrested the suspects.

Eagle and civet rescued by villagers in North Cotabato town
The local government of M'lang town in North Cotabato is set to turn over a wild cat, commonly called "musang," and an eagle to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of Region XII.
A farmer in Barangay New Consolacion found them in a rubber plantation last week.
The local government unit of M'lang said the eagle and the wild cat are in good condition.
Residents of M'lang were educated by the LGU and the DENR not to harm animals found in their areas.
