Invasive Starfish Species Increasing
A species of starfish called crown of thorns is growing in number off the coast of Samal Island in Davao del Norte prompting the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 11 to start collecting them to prevent further damage to the coral reefs.
Speaking in Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao, BFAR 11 director Fatma Idris said it has integrated the collection of the crown of thorns to their coastal cleanup activities in a bid to control its population.

Worlds Largest Bat Sanctuary
The Guinness World Records has recognized the bat sanctuary in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) as the world's largest for any colony of Geoffrey's Rousette Fruit Bat (Rousetteus amplexicaudatus), a conservationists’ group said.
Conservationists here and abroad said this recognition highlighted efforts to save one of the country's most hated and misunderstood creatures.
The Texas-based Bat Conservation International has described the colony as among the few known to scientists.

Monfort Bat Cave To Implement Eco-touris
Babak, Island Garden City of Samal, March 21 — The Monfort Bat Cave and Conservation Foundation, Inc. (MBCCFI), after it was awarded the 2013 PATA Foundation Grant, will implement the Monfort Bat Eco-Tourism Community Development Initiative (MBETCDI) in Barangay Tambo, Babak here.
