Kites And Other Fishers
Operation Sagip Sawi (Save the Grey-faced Buzzards) was in full swing in Northern Luzon, and I was off for the weekend with Jelaine and Lala to support Alex, Tere and the ARRCN (Asian Raptor Research and Conservation Network) Japanese contingent on their visit to Ilocos Norte and Cagayan Valley.
But... we had a few hours free in the morning to bird with Laoag-based Richard R. He had once again spotted a rare migrant visiting his birding spot and was keen to show it to birders who traveled the long road north to see it. For our trio, the opportunity was perfect for a twitch.
And so, fresh ... -
Asian Waterbird Census In Pagbilao, Quezon
It is that time of the year again when Philippine birders flock to wetlands to check the presence of our feathered winter visitors. I looked around inside the van and found my fellow volunteers chatting cheerily as we made our way from our respective pick-up locations. Aboard the car were Ronald Altamirano and Bernadette Roxas of Team Energy Foundation Inc. (TEFI) and Harry Miller, Arnel Telesforo, and I of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP). Together with our weapons for "hunting" and counting birds (i.e. spotting scopes, binoculars, and field guides) we went southwards toward Pagbi ...

Environment Advocates Move To Reduce Disasters
Environmental advocates and numerous government agencies joined Senator Cynthia A. Villar in the kick-off ceremonies for the observance of the 2016 International Day for Disaster Reduction set on October 13 this year.
Villar led some 800 participants in the clean-up and establishment of a bamboo nursery at the Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area (LPPCHEA).
"We must all work hand in hand in the fight against environment degradation. We are all well aware that the protection of our environment is the key to the reduction of natural and man-made disasters," Villar said ... -
Villar Rejects Plan To Build 13-B Manila Bay Airport
Sen. Cynthia Villar appealed to the incoming administration of president-elect Rodrigo Duterte not to pursue the proposed reclamation of Manila Bay as a site for a new international airport.
Villar, a known advocate of environmental protection, said the reclamation of Manila Bay would destroy the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area (LPPCHEA). On March 16, 2012 Villar filed before the Supreme Court a petition or writ of kalikasan.
"I appeal to president-elect Duterte to look beyond the claim of decongesting existing airports and realize that the planned reclamation ... -
Spotting Feathered Friends
Haribon Foundation conducts bird watching tour each year as part of its annual Welcome to the Birds series of activities, where over half a million of migratory birds including globally threatened species visit the country typically from September to March to find temporary shelter, forage for food and rest from the harsh winter months.
One of the recently conducted tours was in Las Piñas- Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) to student groups, members and volunteers who wanted to learn and observe the wide variety of bird species. Just a few hours away from the metrop ... -
Breathing Space Twitching The Candaba Teals
As I mentioned in my previous post on Candaba, a couple of days after Adri and I did our ocular, Rob and Irene and Mel spotted a new country record: a Baikal Teal. After a few days, a duck which was spotted earlier by Kevin Artiaga (one of Lala's students), was identified as a Falcated Duck (also known as Falcated Teal), another country record!
Exciting times again for Candaba, after last year's Baer's Pochard.
With Adri out on tour, I was happy to tag along with Tere, Alex and Drew to twitch the country rarity. Meeting us there were Tina and Neon ready with their bazooka lenses. Mads an ...
