Last Saturday we went back to Infanta to do some roadside birding. With us was our birding buddy, Peter. When we got to the place, we were surprised that we were the only birders there. Unlike last week. Perhaps it was because the fruits of the Hagimit tree that the birds feed on were now all gone.

  • Flaming Sunbird

Check out the feather details on these Flaming Sunbirds, Aethopyga flagrans digiscoped in Balinsasayao-Danao Twin Lakes during one of our birding tours this year.

The Flaming Sunbird is a Luzon, Guimaras, Negros and Panay endemic inhabiting the lowlands up to 1350 m. It is characterized by the fiery (thus flaming) orange splashes on its yellow belly. It was a windy and foggy morning when we were digiscoping these sunbirds in Lake Balinsasayao, Negros but the sweet and newly-blossomed hibiscus flowers were so tempting, the active little birds did not mind the wind, the fog and the birders oo ...

    Makiling The Magnificent

A fabulous day's birding on Makiling. Richard and I had arranged to meet at 5:30 and drive up to Agila camp, which we duly did. The road is being repaired so we had to dodge graders and the like on the way up. The good birds started early though, as Richard spotted a shape in the road which quickly flew off, we stopped and began the hunt, eventually there it was, Red-bellied Pitta. The light was terrible still, but we eventually both got onto it, a great start to the morning. At Agila camp we parked up, and started walking. Within 50 yards we had our first migrant of the day, a fantastic littl ...

    Birding In Makling And IRRI

At 05:30 of Saturday morning saw myself, Richard and Claire heading up the Makiling trail again, this time birding from the bottom. It can be very quiet, almost birdless on this section, but today wasn't bad. Lots more heard than seen as usual (including a deafening group of Cicadas right at the start of the trail), but we did get views of both male and female Lovely Sunbirds feeding on the purple creeper flowers.

Near here was a female Luzon Flameback, as well as Red-crested Malkoha, Scale-feathered Malkoha, Colasisi, Balicassiao, Philippine Bulbul and Ashy Minivet. A gap in the trees all ...
