  • Tawi-Tawi Offers Festivals Pristine Beaches And Nesting Turtles

    The annual Kamahardikaan Festival in Tawi-Tawi brings out the cultural richness of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). On Sept. 22, the streets of the provincial capital, Bongao, will be filled with pangalay dancers, floats using the Badjao lepa or house boats, games and ethnic food stalls.

    Kamahardikaan means "to honor" in Sinama, which is the vernacular of the Sama??"the collective name of the people of Tawi-Tawi.

    It also marks the day Tawi-Tawi separated from Sulu.

    WWF To Protect Tawi Tawi Mountain

    The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has launched a project that aims to protect Bud Bongao, Tawi-Tawi's most famous mountain.

    Nur-Elnazeem Hadji, WWF-Philippines site coordinator, presented the objectives and expected output of the undertaking during a recent meeting with members of the Bud Bongao management council (BBMC).

    The BBMC is composed of local government executives, Sangguniang Bayan committee chairpersons, planning and development units, barangay representatives, civil society organizations and religious leaders.

    The first time we attempted to go to Tawi-tawi several years back was not successful. We were already in Jolo waiting for the fastcraft from Zamboanga when a sudden storm hit the city causing the cancellation of the scheduled trip. However, this time we took the plane as the fast craft plying the waters of Jolo, Tawi-tawi and Malaysia had been suspended for sometime already. What caught us by surprise was that the plane going to Tawi-tawi was not just the propeller type but an Airbus. In fact the plane was almost full of passengers.
