Tagbak Marine Park News
Admittedly, the regions of Eastern Visayas are some of the areas I haven't visited as much.
It was a welcome we never expected. We were on a road trip from Malitbog driving to the other side of Sogod Bay. Our guide, Butz, was leading us towards Wawa Bridge, the bridge that connects the mainland and the northern part of Panaon Island which are under the municipality of Liloan, Southern Leyte. We stopped by a viewpoint of Tagbak Marine Park. Once we got off our van, blaring music went on and a group of colorful festival dancers started to perform. On the side are tables of local delicacies and handicrafts. Oh what a welcome, Liloan.
Despite its relative proximity to the "world's best island" of Siargao, Southern Leyte lies outside the tourism radar and unfortunately only makes it to the national news when a natural calamity such as a typhoon or landslide hits this remote province in Eastern Visayas. It is this obscurity that got me excited on the first day of our Samar-Leyte tour organized by the Tourism Promotions Board of the Philippines when we departed Tacloban City and made it as far as the municipality of Liloan, which straddles the islands of Leyte and Panaon. Liloan, Southern Leyte is no stranger to frequent travelers driving from Luzon to Mindanao. Tagbak Marine Sanctuary, an emerging local destination, is located in Liloan, Southern Leyte which is a four-hour drive from Tacloban City. The best thing about this place is the chance of having the entire beautiful marine sanctuary all by yourself (or with your group) for a day! They can only entertain one group of visitors per day since they only have one cottage, which is specially located at the center of the marine sanctuary. Amazing! They also offer exciting activities such as paddle boarding, snorkeling and many more (soon) for an affordable price.
I was born in a place named Liloan. It is one of the towns in the province of Southern Leyte, Philppines located in northern part of Panaon island.
It is reachable from Manila by air via Tacloban or Cebu then connecting by land from Tacloban, and from Maasin, Bato or Hilongos if from Bohol or Cebu, or by ferry if from Surigao. Panaon Island is surrounded by the waters of the Mindanao Deep, it is frequently visited by schools of whales and dolphins and has the biggest reef areas in Southern Leyte.
Wonder how the place got it's name
Old folks said that "Liloan" is derived from the loca ...
