I took the front seat of the 'torpedo' boat. That's what they call this long wooden motorized canoes without outriggers in Samar. Like the faluwas in Batanes, these boats are designed to navigate wild waters whereas if they have outriggers, it would easily snap from the force of the rapids. Judging by the boats, I could expect an exciting ride over at Ulot River. The Ulot River Torpedo Extreme Boat Adventure is one of the main attraction in Samar which is also a part of the Ulot Watershed Ecotourism Loop attractions of numerous waterfalls, caves, springs and an eagle sanctuary.
Ulot River is the longest river in Samar stretching 90km. The Torpedo Extreme Boat adventure rides its 10.5km of exciting river trail and white rapids culminating with a stop (and an optional jump) at Deni's Point.
The twin provinces of Samar and Leyte are no stranger to tragedy. It was here that the strongest storm in recent history, Typhoon Haiyan, hit in 2013. But, as Jaime finds out, the Samar and Leyte islands are a land of survivors. She starts her journey along the river of Ulot, where the locals have been carving out timber to turn into torpedo boats—the only vehicle able to cruise the tricky, boulder-ridden waterways.

The elusive and critically endangered Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) was again spotted this year in the forests of Samar Island not once, but twice in two weeks, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
