    Celebrating The Bounty Of The Sea

    The province of Pangasinan recently celebrated the bounty of the sea with the Pistay Dayat, a traditional festival held in May at the vast stretch of historic Lingayen Gulf, one of the country's biggest gulfs and longest beaches.

    The highlight of the celebration is the Banca Parada fluvial parade at the Agno River, which featured gaily decorated boats showcasing municipalities, government offices and establishments within Pangasinan.

    USAID To Help Ecofish In The Philippines

    The government hopes to replenish fish populations in key marine areas around the country through a program called "Ecofish," a joint project with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

    The Department of Agriculture and the United States Agency for International Development have funded a project called the Ecosystems Improved for Sustainable Fisheries (Ecofish) headed by Geronimo T. Silvestre.The Ecofish aims to address the problems in marine ecosystem degradation, fish stock depletion and poverty in small-scale fisheries sector in the Philippines.     The provincial board has endorsed the passage of a House bill providing for the establishment of the Lingayen Gulf Marine Eco-Tourism Park here.

    A resolution authored by Vice Gov. Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr. and approved on Jan. 30 supported House Bill No. 1020 of Pangasinan Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil (2nd district) that aims to protect the Lingayen Gulf, maintain its ecological balance and preserve the waters surrounding the area.
