Two Cleanest Greenest LGUs In Region 7 Named

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 through its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) named two regional nominees for the cleanest and greenest local government unit (LGU) search for Model Barangay on Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) nationwide.

The two regional nominees for Central Visayas are barangays Mayana in Naga City and Esperanza in San Francisco, Camotes Island, all in Cebu Province.

According to EMB-7, the two were chosen upon initial validation of all qualified nominees by the LGUs.

"The two barangays were initially chosen according to the provided guidelines in accordance to RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. Our regional validation team will have to conduct the final validation and site visit to verify and confirm the best practices for endorsement to the Central Office for official nomination," said EMB-7 Regional Director William Cu?ado.

Members of the regional validation team included EMB-7 Solid Waste Management Section, representatives from the Department Interior and Local Government (DILG), Pollution Control Association of the Philippines, Inc. and representatives from the LGUs.

The validation team conducted a final validation of accomplishments and best practices in Barangay Mayana in Naga City on February 5 to 6, 2018, and in Barangay Esperanza, San Franciso, Camotes on February 7 to 9, 2018.

Nominees are chosen according to the implementation of Segregation at Source (SAS), Segregated Collection (SC), operationalization of Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), and the implementation of the City Ordinance pertaining to Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

DENR-7 Regional Director Gilbert Gonzales said that the nationwide search aims to recognize and reward model LGUs for implementing Ecological Solid Waste Management and showcase its best practices to motivate and inspire other LGUs to adopt and implement.

"Through this, we would also like to develop a strong partnership with our LGUs and provide them with utmost technical assistance to mobilize all sectors to take part in transforming communities to be clean, safe and green," said Gonzales.

The Search for the Cleanest and Greenest LGU is on its second year with a total of 107 participating LGUs in Region 7.

Winners will receive cash prizes ranging from P340,000 to P1,000,000 and will be announced and awarded on June 2018 in time for the Philippine Environment Month celebration.
