Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental

The Cugman River is home to Catanico Falls which are located about 10 kilometers away from Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental. The falls drop into a swimming pool where bathers could dive from where the water descends; concealed by huge boulders and covered with ferns and moss.

    Within six months, the fast-growing, soil erosion-resistant 'lambago' trees (hibiscus tiliaceus) would sprout along the riverbanks in the city's seven barangays through a river greening project.

    This, after the City Tourism Council, led by its overall chairperson Dorothy Jean B. Pabayo, launched the Cagayan de Oro City of Seven Rivers Lambago Greening Project on October 24 through a series of 'lambago' tree planting activities.

    Actually it was planned to start this morning from the center of barangay F.S. Catanico to hike to the top of the Malasag hills, to cross them an to come out close to the PHIVOLCS station by the road to Sitio Malasag and Mapawa Park. The top images shows the bad conditions we encountered right at the beginning. The onetime dirt road had been badly damaged by landslides and wash-outs from tropical storm Sendong, typhoon Pablo and recently by LPA Agaton.

    Government acts to protect Cagayan de Oro River from pollution

    Environment officials have begun to keep tabs on the water quality of the Cagayan de Oro River, a popular site for white-water rafters, kayak enthusiasts and river trekkers.

    The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has designated the river basin located in Northern Mindanao as a "water quality management area" or WQMA to monitor and take action against activities that might compromise its water quality.

    Environment Secretary Ramon Paje said the Cagayan de Oro River basin was "by far the largest WQMA designation in terms of the vast distances to be placed under a single WQMA."
