    NHCP Opens Underground Cemetery Museum In Nagcarlan Laguna

    The Natural Historical Commission of the Philippines had recently opened the Museo ng Libingan sa Ilalim ng Lupa in Nagcarlan, Laguna, last Friday, January 6.

    Officials of the NHCP, Professor Regalado Trota Jose, Chief Archivist of the University of Santo Tomas; with Ludovico Badoy, NHCP acting Executive Director and Mayor Nelson Osuna of Nagcarlan led the inauguration of the Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery Museum after some restoration works to preserve the area, although small compared to other historical landmarks, were finished.

    Today, I can feel the Halloween season; at the office we're already preparing for an amazing costume party with the touch of Disney characters and while searching for a stunning outfit, I encountered a photo of the oldest cemeteries in the Philippines - the reason why I am now posting these photos taken at Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery, in 2014.

    Laguna Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery

    Located in Barangay Bambang in the municipality of Nagcarlan in Laguna, Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery is a national historical landmark and museum of the town. It is also the only underground cemetery in the country.

    The Baroque cemetery was established in 1845 under the directives of Fr. Vicente Velloc. The cemetery's circular outline gives it its unique appearance. What makes the cemetery more unique is the chapel with an underground chamber at the far end of its entrance.
