Fishermen returned to sea an endangered whale shark (Rhincodon typhus) locally known as Butanding after being caught along the shorelines of Barangay Navotas here recently.
Arthur Valente, the Ilocos Norte provincial fishery regulatory officer, said the Butanding was reportedly trapped inside a fishing net that the fishermen set up.
Aware of the whale shark's vital role in the ecosystem, the fishermen immediately released the butanding after the latter fell on the fishermen's trap.
