Montfort Bat Sanctuary is located in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte. It has been the home of a large colony of 1.8 million Rousette fruit bats since recorded history. They cover 75% of the ceilings and walls of their 75 meter long cave. According to Guinness World Records, it is the largest single colony of this kind.

    The Monfort Bat Sanctuary, in the Island Garden City of Samal, is setting up a chiropterium, a man-made bat cave to provide an additional hub to the 2.3 million fruit bats in a four-hectare eco-parks in Island Garden City of Samal.

    Norma Monfort, owner and president of Monfort Bat Sanctuary, said she has partnered with Virginia State University and hoped to sign the memorandum of agreement with the US-based University by June.

    A bat conservation festival to take place in Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal on June 9 to 11 is being pushed by Ms Nomi Monfort, owner of the Monfort Bat Colony, a Guinness World Record Holder located in IGaCoS.

    To the bat cave off we went on our first (and only full day) in Samal Island, Davao.

    We rode a motorcycle called habal habal which is a common mode of transportation in Samal. It was a 45-minute drive from our hotel to the Monfort Bat Cave. We chose this destination as this is the world's record-holding bat colony - and I feel the need to see and experience it.
