The Mabini Protected Landscape and Seascape is located near Mabini, Compostela Valley and covers an area of 6,106 hectares and includes the islands Kopiat and Lunod in the Davao Gulf.

A new study showed that of the 72 genera of Scleractinian corals identified in the Philippines, about 46 of them can be found in the waters of Mabini, Compostela Valley.

    MPS has 5 diving sites. It hosts a trigger species called the BARAMUNDI COD, a humpback dwarf spotted lapu-lapu fish. MPS has 52 sclera (hard & soft) corals out of the total 72 species found in the entire country.

    A week before Compostela Valley, near Davao City in Mindanao, opened this year's Beachfest bearing a marine environment theme, 21 Hawksbill turtle hatchlings were rescued from sea predators off Kopiat Island.

    This incident has encouraged Compostela Valley Tourism Officer Christine Dompor to strongly push for the declaration of Kopiat Island as a turtle sanctuary, and make it a parallel project of the Beachfest which is held annually to entice visitors to enjoy Compostela Valley's beach resorts.

    Off the Davao coast, Kopiat Island boasts of clear and calm waters and wide sections of shoreline blanketed with fine white sand. It is a tranquil place that, once developed, could become a leading tourism destination in the Davao region.
