Dalutan Island News
Six years ago it was a relatively unknown travel destination. But with its white sand beaches, turquoise waters brimming with marine life, pristine waterfalls tucked away in tropical rainforests and verdant rice terraces carved from gently rolling hills, the island province of Biliran could not be hidden forever. So when a chance came to visit a friend from college who had gone back to his native Ormoc in Leyte, I suggested we meet at Biliran's capital of Naval and see what the province had to offer.
Last year, my friends and I booked a flight to Tacloban in Leyte with one objective in mind ? Kalanggaman Island. Upon arriving at the airport, one year after that ticket purchase, we still had Kalanggaman Island as our main destination. However, it was hard to resist the beauty of Sambawan Island and the natural wonders of Biliran. With a spontaneous change in plans, what was supposed to be a relaxing day on the sandbar in Palompon became an adrenaline-filled adventure in Biliran.
Last March, we took a few days off from the hustle and bustle of Manila to go island hopping in Biliran, among other things.
Like I said previously, it was tricky planning this, especially since we were on a budget. From Talahid, a boat to Sambawan Island alone costs P3500, and this seems to be the price range from Kawayan Port as well. I'd hate to imagine how much we'd have to spend if we wanted to visit the rest of the islands in Biliran.
But the Universe is generous and all-giving.

Lucky for us, we found a joiner day tour, which costs P1699 ...
Day 2 of our Biliran itinerary and the plan was to go island hopping. The crown jewel of the islands in Biliran is definitely Sambawan Island off Maripipi Island. I pre-arranged our boat transfers from Kawayan to Sambawan Island but I asked our boatman, Kuya Juvy of Riza Rose (09464009575), if we can also visit the other islands nearby. After a short while of haggling, I finally convinced him to take us to Dalutan Island, Tingkasan Island, Cogon Island and Poro Island for a very good price. We were supposed to go to Capinahan Island but we ran out of time. If you just want to go to Sambawan Is ...
It might not be as developed as the other tourist destinations in the country, and it may not have the finest sand or the longest beach, but for Matet Garcia-Reyes, Biliran has a charm of its own. Off the beaten path, the island of Biliran boasts majestic islands and surreal underwater treasures.
The resort on Agta beach in Brgy. Almeria faces the island named Dalutan, a quaint island bordered by coarse white sand, bat caves, and marine sanctuaries. It is a perfect venue to commune with nature. The marine sanctuary is also an ideal spot for shore-entry intro diving.
Southwest from Dalut ...
Biliran. This island province of lush mountains, countless waterfalls, and pristine beaches in the east of Visayas does not often ring a bell. Often, it is even mistaken to be part of Leyte, and it was in fact part of Leyte until it became a separate province over 20 years ago.
And it is not as remote as you might think. A flight to Tacloban and a two-and-a-half-hour van ride from Tacloban will take you to the port of Biliran's capital, Naval. From here you can ride a tricycle or habal-habal (motorbike) to explore the province and to check in in one of Naval's lodges and pension houses.
