Mount Data

Tublay, Benguet

The Mount Data National Park covers an area of 5.512 hectares starting from the Halsema Highway tollgate in Tublay, Benguet, to Barangay Namatek in Sabangan, Mountain Province. Its plateau, the most critical portion needing protection and situated within Mountain Province, covers an area of over 3,000 hectares.

The Mount Data forest reserve, located along the boundary of Benguet and ...

the Mountain Province, hosts the headwaters of five major rivers that traverse the Cordillera provinces and drain into the lowlands.

The most extensive of these rivers is the Chico ??" or Rio Chico de Cagayan. Its headwaters are located on the northern slopes of Mount Data. The Chico flows eastward across Mount Data before taking a northeasterly turn towards Bontoc in the Mountain Province. It continues in its northeasterly course to and through the province of Kalinga, where it is fed by the Tanudan, Pasil, and Saltan rivers. From Kalinga, it flows into Cagayan province, where it drains into the Rio Grande de Cagayan.

Also flowing eastward from Mount Data is the Ahin river. It flows through the province of Ifugao, where it is joined by the Ibulao river before it empties into the Magat river along Ifugao's border with Isabela.

Mount Data is a mountain located in the Cordillera Central mountain range rising to a height of 2,310 meters (7,578 feet) in the north of Luzon Island, Philippines. It is about 50 kilometers north of Baguio on the borders of the provinces of Benguet and Mountain Province along the Halsema Highway.

The slopes of the mountain are covered with pine forests and mossy oak forests. Mount Data is known for its great biological diversity and is a place that has long been in the attention of biologists.

DENR Pushes For Mt Data Protection Amid Reclassification Bid

In the present condition of the Mount Data National Park makes it all the more in need of protection rather than reclassification, said an official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

This followed DENR's rejection of a proposal to reclassify Mount Data and remove it from the national park protection program.

The Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) proposed the reclassification of the park to separate portions of the park that are already inhabited and converted into vegetable gardens from the remaining woodland.

Vegetable gardens have taken over 70 perce ...

Cordillera Forests In Peril Says Regional Group

The forests of the Cordillera region, the vital watershed of northern Luzon, are in peril of disappearing, a regional group warned Monday, the International Day of Forests and Trees.

Citing government data, the Cordillera People's Alliance said that, as of last year, "In 2015, government data reveals that the forest cover of the region is 47 percent and it decreasing by at least 300-500 hectares every year."

Abigail Anongos, CPA secretary general, said more alarming is local and national governments' lack of urgency in addressing the threat.

"The case of Mount Data (in Mountain Provin ...

Benguet environmental group hits DENR for allowing mining tenements inside watersheds

While the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) eyes seven sites as protected areas, an environment group in Benguet scores the said office for allowing mining tenements on watersheds which are protected areas.

In an interview, Pastor Vergel Aniceto, chairman of KAIABANG, said that the situation showed the double-bladed policy of the state which declared watershed and protected areas but allowed mining in the said areas. KAIABANG is a provincial alliance of community and sectoral organizations in Benguet where it (KAIABANG) is also the provincial chap ...

A cabinet member has expressed alarm over the rapid deforestation and the potential impact of climate change-triggered effects to communities in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Commissioner Heherson T. Alvarez of the Climate Change Commission (CCC) said the forest reservation in the watersheds and river basins in the region are in critical state with around 500 hectares of forest cover lost every year.

    CAR forest reservation now critical

Former Environment Secretary Heherson Alvarez warned that forest reservation in the watersheds and river basins of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) are in a critical state with 500 hectares of forest cover lost every year.

Alvarez, currently a Climate Change Commissioner, said this is a grim scenario as the capacity of forests to absorb carbon emissions is diminished, which exacerbates global warming and climate change.

"The forest cover in the Cordillera has dwindled to less than 47 percent," Alvarez said.

"Seventy-one percent of Mt. Data National Park had been converted to ...
