    Baler Day Tour Part 1

After our Batanes Trip early July, the third quarter of the year was a freeze to our adventure spree. We were held homebound for quite some time with several trips deferred or shelved off. It was already mid-October when a Baler trip nicked the spell. With six kiddos onboard, we hailed it a HALLEER BALLEER trip; a jolly-relaxed jaunt with no concrete itinerary, no must-visit list; sort of wherever our host Baler native led us to.

Amidst the pebbly highway, the journey went smoothly but just when we were about to enter our lodge grounds, the steering wheel broke unexpectedly. Lucky for u ...

  • Surfs up in Aurora

    Surfs up in Aurora

You see a band of soldiers surfing the high and violent waves, struggling desperately to dodge the attacks from the war choppers of their enemy, persistently buzzing around them. You feel the power, drama, and quick pace of the scenario. And you hear Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries playing in the background.

Why does this scene seem so familiar? Congressman Sonny Angara, Representative of the lone district of Aurora, is the person who can best answer that: "The scene is the most famous surfing scene in movie history. Filmed in Aurora, Baler, at Charlie's Point, it was the setting for ...

  • Ermita Hill in Baler

    Ermita Hill in Baler

Our first destination for the day was Ermita Hill. From our hotel in Sabang Beach, Ermita Hill was about 6 kilometeres away via the Kinalapan-Cemento road. It took us about 10 minutes to reach the area. For those without vehicles, you may hire a tricycle at P500 (this is the standard rate for a tour of Baler's attractions).

Upon reaching the foot of the hill, we were greeted by what seemed to be a war memorial. But I learned that it was actually meant to show what happened on December 1735 when residents seeked refuge on the hill from a tsunami that devastated the entire town. Such a sad an ...
