The area covered two proclaimed watersheds in Agusan del Norte: the Cabadbaran River Natural Forest Reserve and the Taguibo River Watershed. Mt. • Mount Hilong-Hilong Day 2

    Mount Hilong-Hilong Day 2

The next day we resumed our trek at 0745H, after the aforementioned ceaseless winds and rains that pounded our campsite throughout the night (see Hiking matters #495). With only over 200 meters of altitude to gain, we arrived at Peak 1, and mountain's very summit, at 0849H.

It was a true privilege to be there, given the fact that it was off-limits to hikers until recently. Out of respect for the local customs, we kept our silence while we were there, and I uttered a prayer for the protection of the mountain and the lumads of the region. "We will not deprive them because the mountain is for everybody," said Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante, Jr. adding "there are trails to be followed, including resting place and other personal needs that will not create damage and disrupt living things with ...

The city of Cabadbaran, capital of Agusan del Norte, is taking the lead in protecting and nurturing the sea to summit ecological balance of the province, centering on the 2,012-meter Mt. Hilong-Hilong, Caraga region's tallest peak.

Hilong-Hilong is considered among the most difficult mountains to climb, suitable only for climbers with intermediate and expert skills. A recent expedition dubbed "Freedom Climb" took climbers three full days to reach the summit.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, the mountain has seven major ...

  • Groups Want Proposed Bills Seeking To Protect Mt Hilong Hilong Junked

An organization of Butuanons, including US-based group, urged Congress to junk proposed measures seeking to protect Mount Hilong Hilong in Agusan del Norte as these would allow mining, logging and quarrying in the area they try to protect.

Rene Vargas, president of the Ivory Charities Foundation (ICF) in Butuan City, said "the two bills ??" one pending at the Senate and another at the House of Representatives ??" are "deceptive" as these contain provisions that "inexplicably allows mining, logging, quarrying, sale and export of flora, fauna and other resources in the area."
